OpenAI is going all-in on hardware, and it’s doing it by raiding Apple’s talent pool and supply chain. Led by longtime Apple vet Tang Tan, the company has already snagged multiple high-profile designers and engineers with million-dollar stock offers, while also cozying up to Apple’s key suppliers like Luxshare and Goertek. The plan? Launch AI-first devices—possibly a speaker, glasses, or even a wearable pin—by 2026/27. It’s a bold move that puts Apple in an awkward spot since the two are still partners on Siri, but OpenAI is clearly betting that the future of devices will be defined by AI brains, not aluminum bodies.
Google just gave Chrome its biggest upgrade ever by rolling Gemini straight into the browser. Now U.S. desktop users get an AI button that can summarize across tabs, recall sites you forgot about, and soon even handle tasks like booking groceries or appointments for you. The address bar’s also getting an “AI Mode” for follow-up questions without switching windows. Think of it as Chrome growing a built-in AI assistant that’s as common as the URL box. Mobile users aren’t left out either — Gemini’s rolling to Android and iOS soon, making AI-powered browsing feel like the new default.
Luma just dropped Ray3, a next-gen AI video model that doesn’t just spit out footage—it actually reasons through it. Think studio-quality HDR video that looks cinematic, plus the model critiques its own work and keeps tweaking until it’s polished. Creators can even sketch right on frames to guide camera angles or movements, making it feel more like collaborating with an assistant than typing prompts. There’s also a Draft Mode that kicks out previews in 20 seconds for cheap, then levels up to full 4K HDR in minutes. Basically, Ray3 is pushing AI video closer to pro-level workflows while making the whole process faster and more customizable.
OpenAI is rolling out new safeguards for teens using ChatGPT, with Sam Altman saying the goal is to balance safety and freedom. The updates include automatic age detection, stricter versions of the assistant for minors, and parental controls that let parents link accounts, set limits, and even get alerts during potential mental health crises. Teen accounts will block explicit or self-harm chats altogether, even in creative contexts—a move Altman admits won’t please everyone. The changes come as AI faces growing scrutiny over its role in sensitive situations, but with so many chatbot alternatives out there, it’s clear this challenge isn’t going away anytime soon.
OpenAI says it’d totally be down to buy Google Chrome—if the courts ever force Google to sell it. The comment came during a major antitrust trial where the DOJ is trying to break up Google’s dominance in online search. Google’s not having it, insisting Chrome isn’t up for grabs and calling the lawsuit bogus. OpenAI previously tried partnering with Google (no luck), and now it’s riding with Microsoft and Bing. Meanwhile, Google’s flexing Gemini, and OpenAI might even be cooking up its own social network. The AI wars just keep getting juicier.
