1/ Gemini 1.5 Pro Crushes the Competition - Beats ChatGPT-4o and Claude-3

Google's new Gemini 1.5 Pro AI model has taken the top spot in generative AI benchmarks, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude-3. Released quietly on August 1, the experimental version of Gemini scored 1,300 on the LMSYS Chatbot Arena, beating ChatGPT-4o's score of 1,286. This achievement has stirred excitement in the AI community, with users praising its performance on social media. While Gemini 1.5 Pro is currently available, it's still in an experimental phase, so it might undergo changes or even be pulled back for further adjustments.

2/ Is TikTok Breaking Free? The Race to Build Their Own AI

TikTok's shelling out $20 million a month to Microsoft for access to OpenAI's models, making it one of their biggest AI cloud customers. But TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, is working on its own large language model, which might change things. They even got into a bit of hot water for using OpenAI’s tech to do this, which is a no-no under OpenAI’s rules. Microsoft's all-in with a huge investment in OpenAI and a supercomputer for ChatGPT, though they did just miss their Azure growth targets in the latest earnings report.

3/ Reddit Demands Dues from Microsoft and Others

Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, is calling out Microsoft and others like Anthropic and Perplexity for scraping Reddit’s data without paying. While Reddit has struck deals with Google and OpenAI for access, Microsoft has refused to negotiate, leading Reddit to block their crawlers. Huffman argues that the traditional exchange of web data for traffic is outdated as search engines now use data for AI training and summarization. Despite the tension, Huffman sees a future where platforms pay to use Reddit’s content, similar to OpenAI's SearchGPT deal. Meanwhile, Microsoft has stated it respects sites that don't want their data used by its AI models.

4/ Nvidia's Delay Opens Doors for Competitors!

Nvidia's next big AI chip, the "Blackwell" B200, is facing a delay due to a design flaw discovered late in production, according to reports. This hiccup means the chips might not ship in large numbers until next year, which is a bummer for big customers like Microsoft, Google, and Meta, who've already ordered billions worth. Nvidia is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to fix the issue, aiming for a production ramp-up in the second half of the year. The company had hoped to start shipping these chips in 2024 as part of its new yearly release cycle. Meanwhile, competitors like AMD are gearing up their own AI chip offerings.

5/ Chrome’s AI Enhancements Change the Way You Surf

Google Chrome is rolling out three cool new AI features to make browsing even easier. First up, Google Lens is now available on desktop, allowing users to search anything they see on the web without leaving the tab. Next, Tab compare lets shoppers see an AI-generated overview of products from different sites, making online shopping a breeze. Lastly, Chrome is enhancing its history search, letting users find previously visited sites using natural language queries like "What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?" These updates aim to make the browsing experience faster and more intuitive.
