OpenAI just hit a wild $500 billion valuation after employees sold $6.6 billion worth of shares — making it possibly the world’s most valuable startup, even ahead of SpaceX and ByteDance. The deal pulled in big-name investors like SoftBank, Thrive Capital, and T. Rowe Price. Despite not being profitable yet, OpenAI’s partnerships with Nvidia, Oracle, and Shopify (plus its new AI video app Sora) are keeping momentum high. Sam Altman brushed off bubble talk, saying booms and busts are all part of the journey toward massive long-term growth.
OpenAI and Jony Ive’s much-hyped screen-free AI device is hitting some turbulence. According to FT, the team’s struggling to make the assistant sound helpful without turning into a nonstop chatterbox — and cloud capacity issues aren’t helping. The gadget, said to be about smartphone-sized and always on, might miss its 2026 debut. With ex-Apple and Meta engineers on board, this project was supposed to redefine how we interact with tech… but even the AI giants are finding hardware harder than hype.
Apple’s calling it quits on its Vision Pro reboot and shifting gears to chase Meta’s smart glasses game instead. Bloomberg says the lighter, cheaper headset planned for 2027 is officially scrapped, with teams now fast-tracking AI-powered glasses that connect to iPhones and rely on voice control, speakers, and upgraded Siri smarts. One version will even have its own screen to rival Meta’s Display glasses. After the pricey Vision Pro flopped, Apple’s betting big that AI wearables — not headsets — are the real future.
Meta is spicing up Facebook Dating with AI, rolling out two new features aimed at killing swipe fatigue. The first is a dating assistant chatbot that uses text prompts to surface better matches and even drop profile tips or date ideas. Instead of sticking to basics like age or education, it digs into unique interests to make things more personal. The second, called Meet Cute, skips swiping altogether by delivering a surprise match each week. It’s Meta’s way of standing out from Tinder and Bumble, though the real test will be making sure AI doesn’t serve up awkward, off-base matches.
OpenAI says it’d totally be down to buy Google Chrome—if the courts ever force Google to sell it. The comment came during a major antitrust trial where the DOJ is trying to break up Google’s dominance in online search. Google’s not having it, insisting Chrome isn’t up for grabs and calling the lawsuit bogus. OpenAI previously tried partnering with Google (no luck), and now it’s riding with Microsoft and Bing. Meanwhile, Google’s flexing Gemini, and OpenAI might even be cooking up its own social network. The AI wars just keep getting juicier.
