Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called “godfather of AI,” says 2026 is going to be a big year for AI — it’ll get smarter, faster, and start replacing even more jobs beyond call centers. He warns it’s already improving at lightning speed, doing in minutes what used to take hours, and could soon handle software projects that now take months. While AI could help in medicine, education, and climate work, Hinton’s worried about risks like deception and massive job loss. Big companies are already betting on AI cutting costs and boosting profits, and some entry-level jobs are already disappearing. Basically, the tech keeps racing ahead, and humans might struggle to keep up.

Meta just dropped over $2B to buy AI agent startup Manus, grabbing a real, revenue-generating agent platform instead of just another model. Manus went from launch to $100M ARR in eight months, beats top models on real-world agent benchmarks, and actually ships products people use. The team’s cutting China ties, moving fully under Meta, and the CEO is joining Zuck’s inner AI circle. Translation: Meta didn’t want to wait for its own models to catch up, so it bought something that already works.

OpenAI just expanded its ChatGPT app directory, letting third-party developers submit their tools while giving users a hub to browse and connect services. The directory now has categories like Featured, Lifestyle, and Productivity, and apps like Photoshop, Canva, DoorDash, Spotify, and Zillow can be used directly in chats. Developers can build with a beta SDK and sample resources, though revenue options are still limited for now. This move pushes ChatGPT toward being an all-in-one interface, but building apps doesn’t guarantee they’ll get traction. It’s a big step, but the challenge of getting users to actually adopt them remains.

OpenAI says its analytics vendor Mixpanel got hit by a security incident where an attacker grabbed some API users’ profile info like names, emails, and device details — but none of the sensitive stuff was touched. No chats, API keys, payment data, or credentials were leaked, and regular ChatGPT users weren’t affected at all. OpenAI cut Mixpanel off immediately and is notifying anyone impacted. The real risk now is phishing, since leaked emails can be used for trickier scams. Overall, it’s a reminder that third-party tools can open doors even when the main system stays locked.

OpenAI says it’d totally be down to buy Google Chrome—if the courts ever force Google to sell it. The comment came during a major antitrust trial where the DOJ is trying to break up Google’s dominance in online search. Google’s not having it, insisting Chrome isn’t up for grabs and calling the lawsuit bogus. OpenAI previously tried partnering with Google (no luck), and now it’s riding with Microsoft and Bing. Meanwhile, Google’s flexing Gemini, and OpenAI might even be cooking up its own social network. The AI wars just keep getting juicier.
